Great war story.

We'd love to hear more about (from paragraph 3) how to "rehearse an ask" and change "any objection into a good reason to make the gift" in your future posts.

Looking forward to "April 15".

Perhaps your client does not understand the subtleties and nuances that go with major gift prospecting? It's easy to feel like there's an opening and blurt out your request for money.

I'm fascinated by this process. As a novice, volunteer fundraiser, I'm starting to talk to prospective donors. I don't understand the subtleties of asking. It doesn't help that a lot of the advice I get involves not explicitly asking, but doesn't really discuss how you do ask. Would you be willing to write a bit about that?

Chas Grundy's last blog post..On Recruiting Board Members

A simple post with a lot of wisdom behind it. I'm a new development director and I'm trying to get on this path of major gifts. Part of my philosophy is "you don't ask, you don't get." One challenge I have is that we're a respected and comfortable part of the background in our area. Many people in the area highly respect what we do, but haven't ever been in the Museum. So waving a signal flag will be part of how we raise our presence with a wider array of current and potential supporters.

Dear Joshua,

Thanks for the links.

I'm in agreement with you that there is a tremendous need for Jewish fundraisers for universities, nonprofits, and community organizations in Israel. It's a completely different ballgame than any other type of fundraising, both from a Jewish and Israeli perspective.

Wishing you well and congratulations on your newly discovered #3 ranking.

Good post - look forward to reading on how you ask for major gifts. Is there a certain etiquette to this?

The most productive thing that anyone committed to a cause can do is to learn how to ask for major gifts. In the time it takes to plan a bake sale, make the brownies, stand at the table, organize everyone else to do the same, the average committed individual could sit through campaign training, practice and actually go out and ask for one gift which could do more for the organization than 50 bake sales.
