How to Trackback to a Posting on Another Blog

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or sign up for email notification of new posts, under my picture, to the right. Thanks for visiting!

Sheppard left a comment asking how to do a trackback. Instead of leaving the answer in comments, I thought I’d create a post where I describe how and actually trackback that post to James Brausch’s original post noting that comments on his blog are turned off. If you want to comment on someone else’s blog, and either the comments are turned off, as in James’ blog, or if you want to make the comment on your own blog, citing their blog, then you use a trackback.

I had trouble getting it right the first few times I tried too. Instead of linking directly to a post, i thought it was enough to link to the blog as a whole. It is not. So, the first thing you do is decide which post you are going to trackback to.

At the end of that post, click on the word/link “Permalink.” It will take you to the  permanent page with that post on it.  Copy the URL for that post in the address bar at the top of your browser. It will look something like this on James Brausch’s site:  http://www.jamesbrausch.com/?p=395

With that in your clipboard, you create your post on your own blog. If you are using Wordpress, which I know that Sheppard is since I checked out his blog, then you use that URL to create a link within your post to the post you want to track back too. Don’t just create a link to the home page of the blog, as I jsut did to Sheppard’s. Create the link to the specific post.

Also, not that it is not important whether you create a beautiful link with anchor text, as I did with Sheppard’s blog, using his first name as the achor text, or whether you use the full URL in your post (jsut remember to turn the URL into an active link using the posting tool where you are typing in Wordpress.

Now, before you go and hit the  “Publish” button, scroll down the page. You will come to a place to enter “Trackbacks”. This is where you again enter the URL/permalink of the post you want to trackback too. There you have it. You are done. Just hit Publish and let Wordpress connect your Blogs across cyberspace.

And if you like this post, or any other I make, feel free to trackback to it from your own blog. Thanks!
